Katarina Witt started skating at age five. She was able to prove her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. At this school she met their teacher Jutta Muler. Witt achieved her breakthrough when she was ranked second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt caught the eye of the world and she's dominating her sport since then. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. She won a much closer race the following year. In fact, she did not win the free skating contest but she did win gold on the basis of performances during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the first woman to be a multiple winner in figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes as a performer, but she returned to her sports in order to compete during her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she was awed by fans even with the fact that she finished seventh. The year 1995 was the year that Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
